APS Frequently Asked Questions

What is the APS Storage Rewards pilot?

The APS Storage Rewards pilot is a resource to help support a reliable, affordable and clean energy future. During periods of high demand an event may be called and your battery manufacturer will signal your battery system to discharge stored energy back to the power grid.

How will I know if I’m eligible to enroll?
  • To participate in the APS Storage Rewards pilot, you must be an APS residential customer. You must also use a battery storage system operated by an eligible manufacturer, and your battery must perform in accordance with your utility interconnection agreement (IA).

  • Your battery interconnection application must receive Permission to Operate (PTO) from APS prior to enrolling in the program.

  • Please see the list of eligible battery manufacturers and models below. You can also reach out to your installer to see if they install one of the supported inverters.

What is the compensation amount for participating?

The APS Storage Rewards pilot uses a pay-for-performance structure. By enrolling and participating in the pilot, you can earn $110 per average kW you contribute during an event from your battery to APS throughout the summer season.

How much can I expect to earn?
  • Your payment will be based on the average power contribution, in kilowatts (kW), of your battery system throughout all event hours.

  • Battery system performance will vary based on size, configuration, internet connectivity and other factors. Please contact your battery storage system manufacturer for more information about your battery's expected performance.

  • For example, a customer who has an average contribution of 2 kW across all events would earn $220 for the season. This is calculated by multiplying the average contribution (2 kW) by the compensation rate of $110 for each kW. So, 2 kW times $110 equals $220.

  • The example provided below is for illustrative purposes only. The number of events, including the duration of each, will vary based on grid needs. For questions regarding compensation, please email APSStorageRewards@energyhub.com.

How will I be notified of an event?

You’ll be notified of the date and time of the event beforehand by email, text or other form of communication.

How many events can I expect?

The number of events will vary depending on APS’s grid needs, but no more than 60 events will be called each season, May 1 to October 31. Events may take place on weekdays, weekends and holidays from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

How long will each event last?

Events will range from one hour to four hours.

When and how can I expect to receive my compensation for participating?

Once your battery’s performance data has been validated, compensation payments for performance will be processed as a bill credit within one to two APS billing cycles after the end of the season. If your bill credit is more than your APS bill, the remaining balance will roll over to next month.

How can I ensure that I’ll still have backup energy if I need it?

You can always opt out of events. In addition, some battery vendors can help you configure your system to limit how much your system will discharge during events. Please note, however, that these actions will affect how much your system can earn.

Can I participate if I have a battery storage system only (without solar)?

Yes, customers who do not have solar but have an eligible battery system that charges from the power grid may participate in the APS Storage Rewards pilot.

Do I need to maintain an internet connection to my energy storage system?
  • Yes. This ensures your device can be communicated to.

  • During events, if we cannot communicate with your energy storage system, or if your energy storage system cannot discharge when needed (due to a maintenance issue), the amount earned will be affected.

Are leased systems eligible to participate?

Leased devices must be compatible with the pilot design and are subject to your lessor contract for any limitations.

How can I opt out of an event?

Battery partners provide the opportunity to opt out of events. You will need to communicate your intent to opt out of an event using the method provided by your battery partner.

  • Fortress Power customers can opt out within their Fortress Power App.

  • FranklinWH customers can opt out within their FranklinWH app by toggling the 'Participate in Event' button under event details.

  • Tesla customers can opt out within their Tesla app by toggling the 'Virtual Power Plant' button under event details.

How do I unenroll from the program?

Please contact EnergyHub at APSStorageRewards@energyhub.com to unenroll from the program. Please note: If you have a Tesla battery, it may take up to one week for your device to be fully removed from the program. During this time, your device might still take part in an event if one is scheduled.
